 'Twill be a Colorful Basket Instructor: Ida Atkinson

Space dyed weavers create a gorgeous effect in this 2/2 twill. Twill allows for a very close weave - no checker board holes in this creation. Students will use an over two under two grid to weave the base in natural reed then choose one of two tricolored weavers for the rest of the basket. Color trios will depend on availablity at the time of ordering.  

 

Skill Level: This is a Beginner level class.

Warp-as-U-Weave Loom  - Instructor: Sue Black

Have fun weaving a square on a 7X7” loom.  As you weave along one side of the loom, the other side and a warp thread are created as well. This is different from the Weavette technique. No weaving experience is needed to enjoy this fun project. A great way to use up those odds and ends in your stash.

 

Skill Level: Beginner level, no experience necessary.

Workshop fee: $40 Course includes instruction pages, use of the loom, yarns and suggestions for using your squares. If time permits, weavers may try weaving a triangle or a diamond

Sue's Inkle Weaving

Inkle Weaving- Instructor: Sue Black

 

 

An Inkle loom is a small portable loom used for weaving narrow, warp faced bands which may be used for belts, trims, straps, etc. This type of loom has been traced back over 300 years to England and Scotland. Inkle weaving is not difficult and no experience is needed to take this workshop. Participants will learn how to read patterns, warp up the loom, and weave a narrow band. Looms will be provided for use until

 

Skill Level: All skill levels are welcome.

Janet's Enhanced Rug Hooking 2017

Enhanced Rug Hooking  - Instructor: Janet Conner 

Enhance the beauty of your hooked rugs (AND use up your stash) by adding beads, lace, roving, locks, yarns, fabrics, anything goes!!  Many techniques including Proddy dimensional blossoms will be demonstrated.  You may plan on finishing an ongoing project or starting fresh.  Instructor will have a wide variety of projects in all different sizes for purchase at beginning of class. 

 

Skill Level: Students should have had a minimum of 1 introductory level rug hooking class.

Folk Art Rug Hooking - Instructor: Janet Conner

Like all old fashioned crafts, rug hooking is low-tech, simple and lots of fun! Learn the sequence and procedure of rug hooking, from start to finish. Every step will be demonstrated. We will discuss the history and tradition of primitive rug hooking, learn about finding and preparing materials, and research sources for design inspiration. You will choose from a variety of simple folk art designed rug hooking KITS, for a small mat or chair pad, purchased directly from the instructor. Your rug hooking kit will include  everything needed: hook, instructions, design suggestions, binding, burlap, hoop and a selection of one-of-a-kind heirloom and hand dyed wools. 12” chair pad size is $58.50.

Mary's Embroidred Eco Print 2 2017

Embroidered Eco Prints  - Instructor: Mary DeLano 

Turning nature's bounty into art.  This class will teach you how to use five or six simple embroidery stitches to accent an "eco print,"  turning it into a lovely wall hanging.  Students will select from prints made by the teacher with images of plants from local fields and gardens made through a process known as "eco printing.  Students will have the opportunity to stitch with a variety of threads, including silk, wool and cotton.

 

Skill Level: Any Level – some stitching or hand sewing experience is desirable

Mary's Eco Printing 2017 11

Eco Prints  - Instructor: Mary DeLano (Full 6/1/2017)

Learn how to print plants on fabric. Eco printing is a process where plant materials are placed on specially treated fabric and then steamed to release the pigments in the plants, leaving realistic prints of the plants on the fabric. Students will learn about which plants print reliably and will have a chance to experiment with other plants. Students will take home eight printed pieces of fabric, including one silk scarf.

 

Skill Level: All skill levels are welcome.

Braided Roving Mat - Instructor: Kim Durkee

Making a 9" round or oval hot pad/trivet from roving. Learn the art of working with roving, wool that has been carded but not yet spun. We will braid the mat and then needle felt the ends for a perfect and even look. Practical uses: hot pad, trivet, decorative mat for a table, or as a gift. There are a lot of colors in many shades: Naturals, Greens, Reds, Blues, Browns, Yellows, and Purples

 Braiding a Trivet - Instructor: Kim Durkee

All the materials will be provided for each student. Learn the art of rug braiding in this all day class. You will learn the basics of how to braid and butt the ends. We will make a trivet. I will be available via email or a phone call to help you complete your trivet just in case you do not finish it in class. I will have Barbara Fisher's book on braiding for sale at an additional cost of 20.00 for those who are interested.      

 

 

Skill Level: All skill levels welcome

Workshop fee: $65 - Includes materials, including the wool: 1 yard per person, a couple of colors (about 25.00 in value)  I will bring a sewing machine, needles, thread, braiding stands, and samples to follow by. Also, common pins, safety pins, needles and lacing thread and a sample of a butt all pinned for each person to take home. This is a life saver for anyone learning to braid. Each student will end up with a sample on how to do it correctly.

Ellen's Clutch 2017

Small Felted Purse with Kiss Clasp - Instructor: Ellen Hedglin

IIn this workshop we will learn wet felting with a resist/template and 3D shaping and design with decoration techniques to make beautiful felted clutches, coin purses, or eyeglass cases. Working with a selection of colored or natural wools, and by adding various fabrics and neps, our emphasis will be to create a strong seamless 3D felt. We will also learn to make flat felt, and to use a pattern to create the purses in a second manner. After felting, many techniques to decorate the purses will be discussed and implemented along with fitting and sewing in the kiss clasp. Come create a purse or two in a fun and creative environment.

Fiber Art Beads - Instructor: Ellen Hedglin

During the morning, in this fun class we will make fiber art beads. Which are beads made from a variety of materials such as yarn, felt, linen ,fibers, material, silks and beads. The technique is easy to learn and the combinations are endless. 5-6 different styles will be demonstrated, with a chance for you to complete them also.

 

In the afternoon, we will use our beads to make fun and funky jewelry. Supplies and materials will be available to make bracelets earrings or necklaces. A variety of wire wrapping and basic jewelry skills will be learned.

The traditional lace shawl features unique shaping that allows it to remain in place while being worn. Yarn choices, lace pattern inserts, construction, edge treatment and blocking will all be covered. Come have fun creating a handful of nifty folded cards. We’ll do some folding techniques similar to origami but with the goal of making beautiful, funky, and cheerful little cards and books suitable to use as greeting cards and small gifts. We will make a Victorian Purse, star book, little pocket book, a pop-up box and an accordion photo card. I’ll bring stamping and collage supplies to decorate our creations too.

Coptic Bookbinding - Instructor: Anna Low, Purplebean Bindery 

Learn one of the classic bookbinding stitches - Coptic binding.  The Coptic binding is an ancient way to sew together a book with wonderful contemporary applications. It’s a great binding technique to learn and master both for beginning bookbinders and experienced book artists. In this class we will focus on constructing a blank book, paying special attention to cover materials, page paper and the overall design of books as decorative and functional objects. Students will leave class with their own bound book in addition to instructions and tools to continue making Coptic bound books

 

Skill Level: No bookbinding experience is necessary.  please bring a hard cover book, no larger than 8.5” in any direction, to

Kendra's Felt Jewerly Techniques 2017

Felted Jewelry Techniques - Instructor: Kendra Rafford

Join us as we explore the creative possibilities felt adds to jewelry making. Students will spend the day learning techniques to create different felt components. This includes balls, rings, folds and flaps. Learn to embed objects, layer and expose colors. The pieces created can be stand alone jewelry or be incorporated with more traditional materials to make earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and shawl pins.

On the Edge - Nuno Felting - Instructor: Kendra Rafford

In this one day class students will create a nuno felt scarf in which fine merino fibers are felted into a silk chiffon base. The main focus will be on extending its shape and design by felting off the edges of the base fabric. Among the topics covered will be tassels, open design with fine lines and crisp shapes as well as ruffles. Students will have a choice between a white or black base.

 

Skill Level:  All welcome but felting experience is helpful

Materials Fee: $15 payable directly to instructor for silk base and use of equipment

 

Materials student should bring to class:  4-6 oz of solid, multi-colored or hand-dyed fine merino fibers (18-19 micron) for main color of your piece plus additional quantities in other colors you wish to incorporate. Please note the fiber and micron count is IMPORTANT in order to insure the fibers will migrate through the silk base. You may wish to bring wool locks or yarns for use as tassels. A few old towels, scissors and pen and paper for note taking

Kendra's Felt Slippers 2017 1

Felted Slippers - Instructor: Kendra Rafford    (Full 5/6/2017)

Learn how to transform loose fluffy wool into warm, cozy slippers using the wet felted flat resist method. This process allows you to customize size as well as color and design. The main focus will be on sizing and moving from 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional for an ideal fit. Additional design embellishments that can be added later will be demonstrated and discussed.

 

Skill Level:  Open to all skill levels.

Materials students should bring: *6-8 oz of wool that will felt well (either batt or roving form is fine) in desired colors for slippers, a few old towels, sharp scissors.

Sybil's Lacy Cowl 2017

 Lacy Cowl Instructor: Sybil Shiland

This warm and cozy cowl is a good pattern for featuring a special yarn or yarns and can be as wide or narrow as you wish. The cowl is a versatile garment that can be worn as a drapey single loop, doubled and worn close to the neck or even around the shoulders.  Be creative with your yarn choices-you might knit stripes or use a variegated yarn for the bottom section.  A smooth yarn that will show off the pattern is a good choice for the lace section. You may also use the same yarns for both parts in different colors.  A pattern will be provided or you can invent your own with a lace pattern of your choosing.

 

Skill level: Participants should have basic knitting skills : casting on, knitting, and purling, increasing and decreasing.

Materials student must bring to class: -About 200 yards soft, light weight yarn (sport/sock/ fingering) for each section (so about 400 total). The yarn I used in the example was 2 colors of Shibui Staccato.   

 -circular knitting needles, at least 25”, size 6 (or to get about 6 stitches to the inch) the cowl measures about 44 inches around and is knit in the round so the circular needle should be long enough to knit about 200 stitches comfortably

Make a warm and colorful hat or headband for yourself or someone else.  We will cast on and work a Latvian Braid for the bottom edge. Then choose  colors and a peerie pattern for each third of the hat. 

 

Skill level: Participants should have basic knitting skills: casting on, knitting, and purling.

Materials student must bring to class: You are welcome to bring your own worsted weight yarn - two main colors of the same type (harrisville, brown sheep,whatever) -this hat is a great way to use up small amounts of yarn- and you will need a 24” size 5 round needle (aprox. 4.5 stitches to the inch) and size 5 double pointed needles.  Small skeins of worsted weight in a variety of colors will also be available to purchase.  The hat uses between 2 and 3 ounces of yarn.

Pine Needle Basketry Instructor: Margaret Thrasher 

Learn to coil with pine needles as you create this pretty basket. Beginning with a slice of a walnut shell, you will start with the wrapping stitch. You will learn to make the naturally spiraling chain stitch, and the wheat stitch will finish off your basket. Learn about preparing pine needles and about current trends in pine needle basketry.  Demension 3 1/2 x 1"

Beyond Zoom Looms - Pin Weaving On a Higher Plane Instructor: Linda Whiting  

Zoom looms and Weavette looms are fine for making small squares but what if you aspire to more? What if you have a more adventurous muse who wants to combine different yarns or even add different materials to your weaving. You can weave a larger square or rectangle or even weave a shape or weave to a clothing pattern. Come learn the possibilities!  We will be weaving a larger square which when completed can be used as a pillow top as is, or with borders sewn to the edges to make a larger pillow. It can be lined and made into a clutch bag or to become a pocket or focal element of a garment. Weaving does not always have to be done horizontally. Learn how to create hills and valleys and incorporate various yarns, colors, textures to make your woven piece totally and uniquely your own. We will discuss many ways of using this technique that you can take in whatever direction you choose to go with it.

 

Skill Level: All skill levels are welcome.

Workshop fee: $80 includes foam base for weaving your square, long weaving needle, fusible interfacing backing.

 

 

Materials to bring to class: Package of long, glass-headed quilting pins, scissors, a selection of yarns and other weaving materials (cloth strips, metallic cord, ribbons, etc.  Think about coordinating your colors, and bringing other materials to share with the class. Bulkier  yarns will weave more quickly than finer yarns. Finer yarns could be bundled to bulk them up. Yarns and ribbons can be combined in your weaving. Be creative in your choices. Imagination is the key.

Radiant Gradient Dyeing  Instructor: Linda Whiting  

We have all seen those gorgeous scarves and shawls that have multiple values of a color from the very palest to the very deepest, intense color, or hooked rugs that show the most delicate shading from light to dark of a flower's petals or gradient sky. How do they manage to create these color differences? Whether you dye cloth for hooking rugs or yarn for knitting, weaving or crochet there are a number of ways to achieve these fine color gradients. We will be experimenting with yarn and wool cloth and various techniques to create these subtle shifts of color. Everyone will have samples to bring home.

 

Skill Level: all are welcome, dyeing experience helpful but not necessary.

Workshop fee: $85 Includes packet of five mini skeins fingering yarn (enough for a pair of socks or accessory), wool cloth samples, dyes and use of equipment, information packet

 

Materials to bring to class:  gloves and apron, scissors, pen for notes. Additional mini skeins if they wish to dye more.

Tapestry Workshop - Expanding Your Horizons – Instructor: Linda Whiting 

Get more out of your weaving by expanding your skills. We'll be using color in new ways to create depth and shadow, transparency and shading. Add to your 'bag of tools' and learn new ways to interpret your designs.  Primarily designed for weavers who have learned the rudimentary skills, this class will give them more techniques to expand their weaving experience. Those new to tapestry will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals as well as exploring these other techniques.

 

Skill Level: Weaving Experience helpful but not required.

Enrollment: 10

Workshop fee: $75 includes information packet, warp, some weft yarns, use of tools

 

Materials student must bring to class:  your loom if you have one, photos, sketches and ideas, pens, pencils, pad for notes and sketching, colored pencils or markers, scissors, any weaving tools you might have, table fork or tapestry beater.

 Simple frame loom will be available for purchase if you do not have a loom.

Create a loon or a puffin by needlefelting.  The focus of this class is how to add small details to small scale projects.  The class includes a kit containing all the tools and materials needed to make both water birds.  Choose one to work on and make the other at home!

Come join us as we create this charming woodland creature using felting needles, wool, wire and imagination. We will focus on design, form, and ways to make a standing figure. We will have great fun creating our own individual Woodsy Gnome and maybe a friend to keep him company on his travels.

Finger puppets can open a conversation, make a boo boo quit hurting and bring a smile. If you are a puppet lover these little charmers will give you a new appreciation for the term “small size, big heart”. We will felt and stitch in new and creative ways, adapting our patterns and materials to our vision as we go. Painted Silk Luminaries  - Instructor: Julie Yarbrough

Peanut butter and jelly, chips and salsa, romance and candlelight. They all go together, hand in glove. Come learn to make your own incredibly beautiful, luminescent silk, candle light lumenary. We will be creating lovely little masterpieces that will then be illuminated with candle light to create a romantic ambiance that will take your breath away and make you the talk and envy of all your friends. Please join us to make and take home a set of silk frames you will paint and set aglow with a non-flame (safety first) votive candle that will show your work to its best advantage. 

 

Skill level: No previous experience necessary. All adult learning levels welcome
